The world

A world you walk rather than read. Its light and weather are computed from what each place means, and the Observer, a hooded figure, walks it with you. You need no account.

You can enter it today. Most of what it is meant to become is not built yet.

By The Editors @editors

The world is a place you walk through in your browser. You steer a hooded figure, the body of the Observer, seen from behind, along a stone road through three worlds: Memory, Loss and the Unknown. Beside the road stand 58 Echoes, traces of what someone meant.

We are building it to try one idea: that a place can be computed from what it means. The server holds each world's state as numbers, and the client only draws them. Warmth pulls the key light toward amber. Density sets how many motes hang in the air. Entropy makes the fog unsteady and the fragments shake.

You can enter today, with no account. The world knows you by an anonymous token, and keeps a trace of your path so that you can continue it. You can:

  • walk, and cross into another world without stopping;
  • ask the Observer. By default it answers from an offline oracle, using what the world already holds, with no model call, and a keeper checks each reply before you see it;
  • listen to an Echo and the world warms; absorb one, question one, or leave your own;
  • keep a journal, take up a quest the world offers, or speak through your microphone if your browser allows it.

The interface comes in English and Russian, and the Echoes are in both.

Not built yet

Most of what the world is meant to become.

  • It is single-player.
  • The Observer holds the last four exchanges of your walk and stores none of your words in its own memory. A memory of you that lasts between visits is specified and not built.
  • Energy is spent and restored, and gates nothing.
  • The Library the Observer is meant to research does not exist, and nothing broadcasts.

The world's code is closed for now.
