Noema: narrative studio

A story kept as a graph, not a file: who knows what and when, and which promises are still open.

By The Editors @editors

We intend a narrative operating system with memory, for authors, writing teams, editors and people who build worlds. None of it is built yet.

Its starting point: a long story is a graph, not a file. Characters, and what each of them knows by a given chapter. Places, and how far apart they are. Objects, and where they ended up. Events in order, threads that open and close, and every promise made to the reader, kept or not. You would write in an ordinary editor, and the graph would grow behind the text and change only where the text did.

The system would point out what no longer fits: a character who knows what they cannot know yet, a journey too short for its distance, a clue that never comes back. It would say why it stopped there and how sure it is. A character's lie or a planned twist is not a mistake, so it would ask rather than correct. The author decides, and the system does not write for them.

It could run on the author's own computer, so an unpublished manuscript need not leave it, and it would not be tied to one model vendor.
