Noetic Computer
A machine whose basic step is a checked change of meaning, not a CPU instruction.
By The Editors @editors
An ordinary computer executes instructions on data. The question we want to test is what happens if the machine's step is a transition instead: a meaning, held in a typed state, changes by an allowed rule after being simulated, and the machine records a proof of why. It would run as software on ordinary hardware. Its parts would be a repository for memory, a language for programs, a virtual machine, and policies that bound what a program may do.
We know how far off this is. In our plan it comes after simpler things: first a renderer, then a repository, and only what those turn out to need. The long goal is a language that compiles itself. We mean it seriously, and it has to earn its place.
